Formula
| Metric | 1 t = 1000 kg = 1 000 000 g, 1 q = 100 kg |
| Chinese | 1 jin = 500 g, 1 liang = 50 g, 10 liang to a jin |
| Imperial | 1 lb = 16 oz = 0.453592 kg |
| Three tons | metric 1000 kg, long 1016.05 kg, short 907.18 kg |
| Densities | concrete 2.4 t/m³, sand and gravel 1.5 t/m³, steel 7.85 t/m³ |
1000 kg is 1 tonne, 2000 jin or 2204.62 lb. A 30 t load of gravel is about 20 m³ at 1.5 t/m³ — plan loads by weight, not by volume.

FAQ
Why is rebar settled by theoretical weight rather than on the scales?
Bar diameters carry a permitted tolerance, so weighing lets negative tolerance cut the real steel area. The standard fixes theoretical mass by nominal diameter (Φ20 = 2.47 kg/m) and settlement uses mass × length. “Non-standard” bar can weigh correctly while being undersized, losing over 10% of capacity.
Is the jin still used in construction?
For sundries and small hardware markets — nails, wire, welding rod — quotes still come by the jin at 500 g, a factor of two from the kilogram, which invites confusion. Contracts and settlements must be in kilograms or tonnes; where a verbal quote is by jin, write the converted mass on the document.
How far apart are long and short tons?
A long ton is 1016.05 kg, a short ton 907.18 kg — 12% apart. On imported equipment, confirm which “ton capacity” is meant; picking the wrong one overloads a crane or truck by 12%, which is a safety issue rather than a rounding error.
